Each Tuesday (or Wednesday if it’s been “that kind of a week”), we blog about the “People Behind the Packs.” We want to introduce you to the members of our family and our other partners, all of whom are working together to bring you what we hope is the best product of its kind on the market!
Every detail that goes into making a Flaxie Pack is important, but none more so than the fresh, pure, silky seeds we put inside them. We kissed a few frogs as we were building and testing our prototypes– finding high quality product at a reasonable price can be tough. But before too long, we found our flax seed supplier in Gene & Wanda Bethke of Purity Seeds. Score!
Located in eastern South Dakota, Purity Seeds USA has been in operation for three generations. The farm was established in the 1930’s when Gene’s grandfather moved to South Dakota from Bellingham Minnesota. Traditional crops over the years have varied from wheat, rye, corn, sunflowers and millet, but after hearing of the many wonders of flax, the family decided to grow and package it.
Initially, Flaxie Packs ordered Wanda & Gene’s seed by the bag, but demand has quickly increased. In fact, our last order was half a ton! Thanks to the tremendous initial success of our new venture, our next order– scheduled for later this month– will be a full 2,000 pounds. (We are grateful to have found the perfect place to receive and store our seed in climate-controlled conditions at the Business Factory of Frederick, although all production continues in the individual workrooms of our local home seamstresses.)
Gene and Wanda have three sons Jordan, Anthony and foster son, Jacob. Their hope is that Purity Seeds USA will ensure each of them a future part in the farming community.
